The Lavinia Curriculum is transforming summer learning into a season of discovery and empowerment. At our Rising Grade 5 program, students are diving deep into literacy through Lavinia’s structured weekly components — Morphology and Phonics, Fluency, Main Idea, Craft and Structure, and other key elements that build comprehension and confidence.
Each week, students engage in close reading, annotation, and discussion, as shown in the classroom notes above. These lessons encourage learners to identify genre, analyze main ideas, and connect themes of perseverance and identity.
📚 Novel Study: Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper
Through the Novel Study method, students explore Out of My Mind, the story of Melody Brooks, an 11-year-old girl with cerebral palsy who cannot walk or talk but possesses extraordinary intelligence and insight. Reading directly from Melody’s thoughts allows students to experience her world from a new perspective — one that challenges assumptions and celebrates difference.
Students make text-to-self connections, reflecting on how Melody’s experiences mirror their own feelings of being misunderstood or underestimated. This exploration of identity and resilience helps them see that disabilities are not limitations but different pathways to success.
🔍 Connecting Texts: Helen Keller and Perseverance
In parallel, students read the nonfiction article Blind and Deaf—Not Dumb, learning about Helen Keller, who overcame immense challenges to communicate and inspire the world. Through close reading and vocabulary study, they discover that Keller was not the creator of sign language but rather a pioneer who proved that disability does not define ability.
Sticky-note reflections and highlighted passages show how students synthesize ideas like:
